Locally produced vermicompost composed of screened worm castings is usually available during gardening season. Vermicompost is rich with microbes, humic acid, and a nutrient balance that is perfect for vegetable gardening. Worm castings are a natural soil additive and do not burn plants. Recommended use of this vermicompost is a maximum of 20% to your volume of planting soil.
Castings can also be added to your watering can to make an extract or “tea” for fertilizing plants or lawns spring through fall. The simplest way to make vermicompost tea is to add a handful of worm castings to a watering can filled with water and stir. For applications on larger areas, vermicompost tea can be made in buckets or in a spray reservoir.
